Lucious Lanzarote... |
Lanzarote is the most North Eastern major island in the Canaries Archipelago and somewhere we have visited before, but seemed suitable for a quick trip to have some winter sun
We were staying on the Eastern side of the Island which along with the South Coast is the most populated area, but from that base it is a very easy
From the outset we had fine (if not always clear) weather and that made for a very enjoyable time
Some highlights from the trip which you can see in the images are described below
Timanfaya is the highlight of the island. An immense national park which is maintined to be as undisturbed as possible. The kay part is the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) which were created between 1730 and 1736 when more than 100 volcanoes,
covering more than 50 km², erupted and devastated this part of the island (including several villages).
The last eruptions were in 1824, however due to the low rainfall (and therefore lack of erosion) the area appears almost the same as it did just after the eruptions.
In 1968 the area was declared a national park, Parque Nacional de Timanfay
The Lava Tubes are extensive across the Island, but on this trip we only visited the ones related to Monte Corona which are described in detail on the excellent cavesoflanzarote.co.uk website.
The Los Hervideros and El Golfo area on the South West of the Island provides another exellent place for a day out with harsh AA lava all over the place at Los Hervideros and the remnant of an ash cone volcano at El Golfo. The name Los Hervideros translates to the “boiling pots"
Just South of that are the fascinating salt evaporation ponds of La Salinas which is another place to go for a sunset walk, so we did.
Not shown in this gallery because I did not take a long enough lens to make it worthwhile is the day we spent Birdwatching with Lanzarote Active Club excellent day out and I have no problem recommending them if you are planning such a day out
The pictures in this section are taken with my E-30 Olympus e-Series camera with a selection of their excellent Zuiko lenses.
